-- Transculturality is a new way of viewing culture that sees cultures not as separate islands that are easily differentiated from one another, but as connected and interacting webs of meaning and practice. The Americas in particular offer many examples of transcultural identities that do not fit easily into one national or ethnic mold: Chicanos, Franco-Ontarians, Creoles, and second and third generation immigrants. From Quebec to Argentina, this volume explores these identities which create themselves in a space between sameness and difference.

"The Picture of Dorian Gray" is Oscar Wilde's classic tale of the moral decline of its title character, Dorian Gray. When Dorian has his portrait painted by Basil Hallward and wishes that he would stay young while his picture changes, his wish comes true. In exchange for this Dorian gives up his soul and as he ages the bad deeds that he commits are reflected in his painting and not him. "The Picture of Dorian Gray", arguably Wilde's most popular work, was considered quite scandalous when it was first published in the late 1800s in Victorian England.

The Muqaddimah, often translated as "Introduction" or "Prolegomenon," is the most important Islamic history of the premodern world. Written by the great fourteenth-century Arab scholar Ibn Khaldûn (d. 1406), this monumental work laid down the foundations of several fields of knowledge, including philosophy of history, sociology, ethnography, and economics. The first complete English translation, by the eminent Islamicist and interpreter of Arabic literature Franz Rosenthal, was published in three volumes in 1958 as part of the Bollingen Series and received immediate acclaim in America and abroad. A one-volume abridged version of Rosenthal's masterful translation was first published in 1969. This new edition of the abridged version, with the addition of a key section of Rosenthal's own introduction to the three-volume edition, and with a new introduction by Bruce B. Lawrence, will reintroduce this seminal work to twenty-first-century students and scholars of Islam and of medieval and ancient history.

Reprint of the standard edition of the Corpus Juris Civilis. Originally published: Berlin: Apud Weidmannos, 1895. 3 vols. 8-1/2" x 11." xxxii, 882; xxx, 513; xvi, 810 pp. Originally published from 1872 to 1895 and sometimes called the Berlin Edition, this is one of the finest examples of German philology and legal scholarship. It is the basis for all modern English translations. Commissioned by the Emperor Justinian in 528 CE, the body of writings known collectively as the Corpus Iuris Civilis reformed, restated and preserved early Roman law. Its subsequent influence on European jurisprudence is difficult to underestimate. Commissioned by the Emperor Justinian in 528 CE, the body of writings known collectively as the Corpus Iuris Civilis reformed, restated and preserved Roman law. It has four components: The Code, the reformed legal system, the Institutes, an elementary textbook about the Code, The Digest, an encyclopedia of legal doctrine by classical-era jurists, The Novels, a compilation of laws and amendments subsequent to the Code. It has been said that the Corpus Iuris Civilis is the second most important book in the history of Western civilization after the Bible. While this statement perhaps suffers from slight hyperbole, the intellectual impact of the Justinianic compilation should not be underestimated. In its original guise, it was an attempt to consolidate an unwieldy legal system. It reduced a mass of materials to a single authoritative collection that could be consulted with ease. Whether it was fit for this purpose is unclear, but in time it came to have a fundamental formative influence on the law of Western Europe (and by extension, elsewhere). When it was rediscovered in twelfth-century Italy, it provided the first coherent body of principles that could be taught in the emerging Italian (and later French) universities. The concepts, rules, and terminology of Roman law laid the foundation for the creation first of the Ius Commune in the period 1100-1400 and thereafter for the creation of the national legal families of Western Europe. Even today, the rules and terms of Justinian s compilation exert great influence on modern law. --Paul du Plesssis, The Oxford International Encyclopedia of Legal History 5:155"

The Age of Justinian examines the reign of the great emperor Justinian (527-565) and his wife Theodora, who advanced from the theatre to the throne. The origins of the irrevocable split between East and West, between the Byzantine and the Persian Empire are chronicled, which continue up to the present day. The book looks at the social structure of sixth century Byzantium, and the neighbours that surrounded the empire. It also deals with Justinian's wars, which restored Italy, Africa and a part of Spain to the empire.

From the bestselling author of Cultural Literacy, a passionate and cogent argument for reforming the way we teach our children Why, after decades of commissions, reforms, and efforts at innovation, do our schools continue to disappoint us? In this comprehensive and thought-provoking book, educational theorist E. D. Hirsch, Jr. offers a masterful analysis of how American ideas about education have veered off course, what we must do to right them, and most importantly why. He argues that the core problem with American education is that educational theorists, especially in the early grades, have for the past sixty years rejected academic content in favor of “child-centered” and “how-to” learning theories that are at odds with how children really learn. The result is failing schools and widening inequality, as only children from content-rich (usually better-off) homes can take advantage of the schools’ educational methods. Hirsch unabashedly confronts the education establishment, arguing that a content-based curriculum is essential to addressing social and economic inequality. A nationwide, specific, grade-by-grade curriculum established in the early school grades can help fulfill one of America’s oldest and most compelling dreams: to give all children, regardless of language, religion, or origins, the opportunity to participate as equals and become competent citizens. Hirsch not only reminds us of these inspiring ideals, he offers an ambitious and specific plan for achieving them.
