State Capitalism and Working class Radicalism in the French Aircraft Industry
"Using the example of the aircraft industry, which takes him like an arrow to the heart of many of the key conflicts in French life between 1936 and 1948, Herrick Chapman has written a penetrating and exceptionally well documented account of the way that France developed her present style of industrial relations, in which the state plays such a central role. No book I know so successfully integrates the history of aviation . . . with the political and social history of France. Both thorough and thoughtful, it is an impressive achievement."--Robert Wohl, University of California, Los Angeles "An unusual, innovative book based on impressive research that throws new light in a major way on twentieth-century French politics and society . . . one of the most interesting and original monographs in modern French history in a long time."--Robert O. Paxton, Columbia University "This is a breakthrough of considerable importance. [Chapman] will become the leading North American, perhaps even English-speaking, historian of contemporary France."--George Ross, Brandeis University

Choice and Democratic Order
Choice and Democratic Order describes the history of the French Socialist Party (the SFIO) during the breakdown of peace in the late 1930s, the period of the Vichy regime, and the postwar reconstruction. The focus of the study is on the party's leadership group and, in particular, how it was affected by several phases of internal conflict, the most serious of which occurred in 1938 and in 1946. Professor Graham emphasizes the continuities between the pre- and postwar periods, and his approach enables the reader to observe major figures such as Leon Blum and Guy Mollet working within the complex structures of their party.
Accommodation and Resistance The French Left Indochina and the Cold War 1944 1954
In this careful historical analysis, Edward Rice-Maximin documents the reactions of the French Left to the First Indochina War, 1944-1954. Unlike previous works, which dealt exclusively with the politics of the French Communists, this book is among the first to deal with the entire French left and to focus directly on the role of the Socialists.

Every Factory a Fortress
French trade unions played a historical role in the 1930s quite unlike that of any other labor movement. Against a backdrop of social unrest, parliamentary crisis, and impending world war, industrial unionists in the great metal-fabricating plants of the Paris Region carried out a series of street mobilizations, factory occupations, and general strikes that were virtually unique in Western history. The unionization of the metal industry, following a series of anti-fascist demonstrations and plant seizures, would constitute the defining episode in modern French labor history and one of the great chapters in European social history. Yet little is known of these extraordinary events. With a style that captures the vivid character of these experiences, Every Factory a Fortress tells the story of the Paris metal workers, who succeeded in organizing the largest Communist union in the Western world, reshaping the parameters of French social relations, and, ultimately, altering the course of French destinies.
In Pursuit of the People
"In Pursuit of the People addresses these questions, and in so doing provides the first comparative analysis of left and right in 1930s France. Challenging the polarization of previous research, it reveals the hidden 'community of thought' that coexisted with very real political differences, as militants, leaders, journalists, theatre and film directors all competed to organize and depict the masses as the people. This book offers an original contribution to the study of political culture, and is essential reading for those interested in the symbolism, ideology, and activism of interwar France."--BOOK JACKET.
