This book provides network managers, LAN administrators and small business operators with all they need to know to "interconnect" multiple locations or travelling employees that need to access a single location. The operation and utilization of virtual private networks is discussed both in theory and practicality, covering the technical aspects associated with encryption and digital certificates as well as the manner by which readers can create VPNs using readily available products from Microsoft, Cisco, Checkpoint and possibly other vendors. The author was among the first to write about the concept of virtual private networking in a series of articles published over five years ago, and in the intervening years this has become a very hot topic - with the technology being increasing deployed by companies. Virtual Private Networking, by Gilbert Held, covers the technology and the theory, but also shows readers, through numerous examples, 'how to use ' the technology.

Excerpt from A Handbook of Gastronomy: Physiologie Du Gout The principal merit Of Grimod de la Reyniere, and that one which endows him with sovereign claims to our grati tude, is that of having been the historian of cookery. His eight years of the Almanack of Gourmands represent eight years of contest. He has, as all journalists have, a good many inevitable faults, compliances, injustices, and careless judgments, but one cannot deny him ardour, de votion, and that faith which raises pie-crusts. We may say of him that he kept going the kitchen-stoves, after having saved them, perhaps, during the great shipwreck of the Revolution. At all events, he is the connecting link that unites the past to the future. Brillat-savarin is more especially a legislator. In him there is something Of Boileau. Yet he warms up now and then. His saying, And you will see marvels, has become celebrated. The Handbook of Gastronomy has had many editions, but not in quick succession: its success was made slowly and surely. Nowadays it is what is called a library book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Rise of the West, winner of the National Book Award for history in 1964, is famous for its ambitious scope and intellectual rigor. In it, McNeill challenges the Spengler-Toynbee view that a number of separate civilizations pursued essentially independent careers, and argues instead that human cultures interacted at every stage of their history. The author suggests that from the Neolithic beginnings of grain agriculture to the present major social changes in all parts of the world were triggered by new or newly important foreign stimuli, and he presents a persuasive narrative of world history to support this claim. In a retrospective essay titled "The Rise of the West after Twenty-five Years," McNeill shows how his book was shaped by the time and place in which it was written (1954-63). He discusses how historiography subsequently developed and suggests how his portrait of the world's past in The Rise of the West should be revised to reflect these changes. "This is not only the most learned and the most intelligent, it is also the most stimulating and fascinating book that has ever set out to recount and explain the whole history of mankind. . . . To read it is a great experience. It leaves echoes to reverberate, and seeds to germinate in the mind."—H. R. Trevor-Roper, New York Times Book Review

Waterborne: Christo and Jeanne-Claude's Floating Piers on Lake Iseo From June 18 to July 3, 2016, 100 kilometers east of Milan and 200 kilometers west of Venice, thousands of people will walk on water. The Floating Piers by Christo and Jeanne-Claude will deploy 70,000 square meters of shimmering yellow fabric above a modular floating dock system of 220,000 high-density polyethylene cubes to create a temporary, three-kilometer walkway across the surface of Lake Iseo, connecting the mainland to the islands of Monte Isola and San Paolo. The piers will be 16 meters wide and approximately 40 centimeters high, with sloping sides. Visitors will experience the artwork by walking from Sulzano to Monte Isola and over to San Paolo. The mountains surrounding the lake will also offer a bird's-eye view of the project, revealing unnoticed angles and perspectives. The Floating Piers will be Christo and Jeanne-Claude's first large scale project since they realized The Gates in 2005 and will draw upon their established history of projects in Italy, including Wrapped Fountain and Wrapped Medieval Tower in Spoleto, 1968; Wrapped Monuments in Milan, 1970; and The Wall-Wrapped Roman Wall in Rome, 1973-74. As with all of Christo and Jeanne-Claude's projects, The Floating Piers will be funded entirely through the sale of Christo's original works of art. After the 16-day exhibition, all components will be removed and recycled. This book presents rich photographic coverage of The Floating Piers alongside sketches, models, documents and designs, revealing the process behind this waterborne work of art. Incorporating everything from approval procedures to the manufacture of fabric and anchoring elements, it testifies not only to Christo and Jeanne-Claude's unique creative imagination but also to the immense technical, bureaucratic, and logistical feats that allowed the concept to take float. Jason Rhoades' work has its origins in the late nineteen eighties and early nineteen nineties when he studied at the University of California in Los Angeles under Richard Jackson and Paul McCarthy. This was a time when the Southern Californian performance scene began to open itself up to exhibition events and the art market in New York and Europe. Rhoades included performative elements in his spatial installations and developed his own thematic cycles of works from it. His sculptural language is trained on elements of mass culture and evolved metaphors by means of great physical exertions which ndash; in their temporality and singularity ndash; signify the unfulfilled desires for spiritual insight. Despite his early death, Jason Rhoades (1965ndash;2007) left behind a prolific sculptural oeuvre. For the first time, Eva Meyer-Hermann chronologically traces the total development and provides exemplary interpretations of this seemingly inextricable work comprising installations that fill entire halls. Quantum-Touch 2.0—The New Human endeavors to significantly enlarge the possibilities of what humans can be and do. In clear, step-by-step instructions, the reader will learn to easily demonstrate that human limits are as yet unknown. Readers can learn to do healing on multiple people at once to reduce their pain in minutes, work on multiple conditions at once, help people shift their own beliefs with the use of energy, and work across time and space. Readers will even learn to safely and visibly adjust the posture of multiple people simultaneously without touching. Science assumes that we are separate, and that our thoughts don't affect the outer reality. This notion is something that each of us can now clearly demonstrate to be untrue. The originator of the Quantum-Touch energy healing method and a popular workshop leader and speaker at conferences and holistic health institutes, Richard Gordon has been developing and refining Quantum-Touch since the publication of his best-selling Quantum-Touch: The Power to Heal. Gordon shares his discoveries in this new book, which takes Quantum-Touch to a far more powerful level. To enrich the book with scientific insights and commentary, Gordon sought out coauthors Vickie Wickhorst, PhD, and Chris Duffield, PhD. As academics investigating the convergence of science, technology, and the power of the human energy field, Wickhorst and Duffield serve as perfect guides to help readers, even skeptical ones, uncover their own process of discovery. This book is a must for all world travelers! From the Trade Paperback edition.
