Latif Al Ani
Known as the "father of Iraqi photography," Latif Al Ani (born 1932) was the first photographer to capture cosmopolitan life in 1950s-70s Iraq, and his black-and-white images constitute a unique visual account of the country during its belle poque. Al Ani portrayed Iraq's culture in all of its abundance and complexity: besides documenting its westernized everyday life, the political culture and industry, he also captured images of Iraq from the air, for the Iraq Petroleum Company. Under Saddam Hussein's oppressive regime, however, Al Ani ceased photographing. Today, his photographs give testimony to an era long gone. His exhibition at the Iraq Pavilion during the Venice biennale in 2016 focused on works from the early period of his career, which reveal both Iraq's modernizing trends and the retention of ancient traditions as particular themes of Al Ani's work.
Architectural Lighting, the latest addition to the Architecture Briefs series, provides both a critical approach to and a conceptual framework for understanding the application of lighting in the built environment. The key considerations of lighting design are illuminated through accessible texts and instructional diagrams. Six built projects provide readers with concrete examples of the ways in which these principles are applied. Short essays by architect Steven Holl, artist Sylvain Dubuisson, and landscape architect James Corner explore the role of lighting in defining spatial compositions.
Fundamentals of urban design
This book explains the fundamental tools for achieving a more cohesive and satisfying environment. Using more than 100 photographs and drawings, Hedman illustrates the basic components of urban design. A great book for teaching planning students about urban design and a helpful tool for introducing citizens to the importance of good design. The book is essential reading for planners, city managers, and other public administrators who need to understand design principles to defend their commuinities against well-intentioned-even attractive-but nevertheless damaging projects.
This book introduces an attitude towards the design and realization of architecture in a time of increased instability. It is illustrated with rarely seen images and punctuated with essays on the work of the firm SO-IL. Rather than a catalog of works, the book is a visual and textual manifesto towards progressive practice in an interconnected and global environment. As a collection of built and unbuilt projects, texts, processes, and experiments, it embodies an intellectual and artistic attitude that has gained this young office attention. Taking the form of a radical monograph, the book curates the firm's content based on conceptual themes, allowing the reader to have a generous, multi-dimensional and immersive experience, similar to how one would experience SO-IL's architecture.
